Do you love Christmas and other festive winter holidays? What sort of centerpieces will you be putting together to celebrate the season? We asked one of our faithful employees, Rebecca B., to whip up a festive holiday wreath for you to try out at home.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to build your own Christmas wreath!
A round, metal wire frame will be the base for your wreath. What size should your frame be? From Balsam Hill, here’s a quick guide to picking out the best-sized wreath:
10 to 16 inches: Best for small windows or mantlepieces
18 to 26 inches: Best for standard front doors
28 to 32 inches: Best for large entryways or front doors
36 to 42 inches: Best for outdoor displays and oversized doors
48 to 60 inches: Best for outdoor displays and walls with high ceilings
We recommend 22-gauge green floral wire. Its combination of strength and color will ensure the sturdiest construction with the most aesthetic finish.
Choose your favorite evergreen firs. Here’s a quick guide to evergreen firs you can find at Lockwood’s. Mix and match different types of greens for the most impressive wreath!
Concolor Fir: Blue-green needles with powdery dusts of white
Fraser Fir: Flat, dark-green needles with silverish underbelly
Nordmann Fir: Supple, glossy black-green needles
European Silver Fir: Mix of dark, glossy green needles and silver hues
Turkish Fir: Deep green, flat, full needles
Popular wreath decorations include:
● Ribbon
● Ornaments
● Holly
● Poinsettia flowers - faux or artificial
● Pinecones
● Bells
● Silver and gold berries
● Glittery branches
● Small photos, illustrations, carvings, and statuettes
Anything your imagination can come up with that pleases you—when you look at it and it feels good, go for it! It’s important that all decor is weather resistant.
Placing a big red bow at the top center of your Christmas wreath is the most classic approach. Other color bows, such as green, gold, and silver—or a combination of all three—are also popular.
Arranging your materials is the hardest part. The next step of building your wreath is easy.
Step 1: Cut greens to size and arrange them in a bundle and wire the bundle to the frame. A typical wreath will take 12 to 14 individual bundles. Each bundle then is wired to the frame.
Step 2: Use your green floral wire to affix the greens onto the wire frame.
Step 3: Add your favorite decorations with wire or hot glue. Don’t forget the bow!
